There are four different ways to apply for VA disability benefits depending on the type of benefit you are seeking which include:
Working with an accredited representative or claims agent.
Going to a VA regional office and have a VA employee assist you. To find the VA regional office nearest you, use the Veterans Affairs National Facilities Locator or call the VA toll free at 1-800-827-1000.
Completing and mailing your claims form to your nearest VA regional office.
Filing your claim online yourself by creating and using an eBenefits account.
If you need help filing a claim, get help. If you feel confident that you can do it yourself, do your research and then do it.
Hold That Date!
The most important thing to remember is not to put off filing your claim any longer than absolutely necessary. The very second that you think you are going to file a VA claim it is essential that you complete an ‘intent to file'(ITF) to hold the date for one year. This means you will get back paid to the date you filed your ITF instead of the date you submit the claim. You can file an ITF by opening a new application on ebenefits, getting a VSO or claims agent to assist you, or by faxing/mailing in a paper ITF form to the VA Evidence Intake Center.
